Honorable Mention The Temple Cat of Blythe Laurie Byro I, most gentle of cats, should be content idly watching carp swim, occasionally dipping my paw into gold that spins--Fish! Yet, I see myself destined for higher purpose. My mastrer, Chin-yeh Sin, is often drunk. He swings a wine jug, sings in the snowy air. I blink at him three times, reassure him that I am the honorable Temple Cat of Blythe. Just last week, one of Master's swans, plumped full of millet, diasppeared. He asked me Most Gentle of Cats, had I any knowledge of this mystery. I demurred, I am fed plump enough not to waste my virility on such action. I would as soon murmer, "I am as trustworthy as a bee in a lotus, I am as reliable as a tick on the belly of a hound." I am a bit preoccupied. How do I choose among such lovely blossoms, those gentle flowers in my harem:? Each is special: a rose, an orchid, a wild tiger lily. I spend my nights flitting from one to the next. Their nectar makes my barbed heart quiver. Vajra guru padma siddhi hum I chant to bring myself back to the sublime bliss of tranquility. I am after all, a gentle temple cat and our benevolent Buddha will tell you, I have been chosen for higher purpose.
